NEXT GIGS!

OUR LATEST RELEASE

Full sized view

21st Feb 2007

Hey peoples of the world. As we won’t be playing in the near future (with baby Dan due any day now!) we thought we’d ‘treat’ you to a couple of videos from our last gig in Drummonds. Not the best sound quality as we were really just recording for the picture, but it’s not so bad and there’s some funny crowd action. Thanks to Matty for filming us and everyone who came down!!

18th Dec

Merry Christmas!!

Alright, sorry it's been a while since we last updated this site but we've all been really busy. We've got a couple of gigs coming up in Aberdeen and Elgin before the end of the year with some new songs and a few covers up our sleeves so come along if you can! Thanks a lot to everyone who made it along to our first gig back - Ska Sunday, it was great fun even if we were a bit rought around the edges! :-)

You can now download our first EP 'No Direction' from Purevolume although it's over 3 years old and not really any reflection on what we play these days!

Anyway, expect a new site and lots more news in the new year, and in the meantime have a Merry Christams and Happy New Year!

We're gonna be on a break for the next wee while as Maltman's off to France and Dave's off to Spain, but expect us back with a bang in October - Olé!!

19th July

G’day!

Well the 14 hour journey to Shetland was made a lot more entertaining by one of us having a little bit too much vodka to drink – check out the video [media section] for a beautiful rendition of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song. Oh ye, if you’re wondering who’s singing with Dan then your guess is as good as ours.

Shetland is a very cool place, everyone is amazingly friendly and accommodating, the scenery is awesome (if a bit different what with the lack of a tree), and there’s some really good bands on top.

We played with Numskull and The Dangerfields on Friday night which was good although we were still recovering from either a hangover (“I can’t remember ever feeling so bad”) or sleeping on the floor of a rocky boat. Saturday night was us and 6 Shetland bands, it was really busy thanks to the efforts of our friends at Energiser promotions, lots of good dancing and the tunes seem to go down well.

Thanks to James, Jono, Jono’s mum and dad, Ruairidh, Phil, the very cool sound man, the punker horse…and everyone else on Shetland.

Anyway, picking up the van today (woohoo) for the next leg of the tour with Chewing on Tinfoil from Dublin. So if you’re from Dundee (19th), Elgin (20th) or Nairn (21st – our Nairn debut!) come down and check them out, they’re very, very good.

Hope to see you there,

Love,

Da Upstarts (that’s Shetland talk for The Upstarts!)

13th July

Well we didn’t win, but nevermind, who wants to play Wasted anyway?! Only joking, well done to A Bit Too Far who won the competition. We came second so that’s not so bad, thanks for everyone who voted, it’s much appreciated.

So last Wednesday, which is surreal as it seems about a month ago now, we left for Ireland. Monsieur Maltman was under great suspicion at the airport, the security folks thought he was gonna take over the plane with his bass pedal, a little pedantic I thought but I guess a bass pedal is enough to get someone excited in Inverness airport. Anyway, Dan survived his first flight unscathed; he only wet himself twice so that’s an improvement on the car journeys.

Arrived in Belfast and got picked up by Charlie - the guy who organised the gigs, drove us to them all, and tried to make us drink Buckfast). We managed to fit in 5 gigs in the next 4 nights which is a new record for us. All the gigs were really good, but the best one was probably Dublin on our last night. First on were Chewing on Tinfoil who we all loved and can’t wait till they come over to Scotland on the 19th to do some shows with us. And then The Upgrades who were also really good. Was just a cool atmosphere, everyone seemed totally into the music and loads of folks were dancing which is always good.

Some Upstarting firsts on our trip to Ireland:

1.Dan in a plane

2.Any of us in Ireland

3.Dave drinking cheap cider

4.A crazy fight on the dance floor during our set

5.Slept in a fancy country house together

6.Sold our merchandise in Euros

7.Discovered the joys of Buckfast – not really but we gave it a go

So thanks to everyone who was so nice in Ireland (Charlie and his Mum, all of Charlie’s mates, everyone who let us borrow their equipment and everyone who was at the shows)

Also thanks to anyone who was down at Drummonds the other night, was one of our favourite gigs, was great to have people singin along and up on stage.

Och well, off to Shetland tonight, hopefully we’ll have some tour footage from there – the Irish stuff didn’t come out very well (meanwhile check out the amazing picture of Charlie's horse on myspace)

Love,

The Upstarts

TOUR JOURNAL: Day -1

Hey folks!

Tomorrow we begin our big fat summer tour 2006. Needless to say we are rather excited, so excited in fact, that we've gone crazy and designed a new website just for you!

Now you too can become a proper hardcore Upstarts fan and learn all our lyrics; you can experience visual perfection with our new slideshow (oh ye, we're soo 21st century); and you can dance away the night with the Upstarts JUKEBOX!!!

So ye, we're getting in touch with our Celtic side and going to Ireland to kick things off (our tour; not the religious tensions). None of us have been before so we can't wait, and it's Dan's first time on a plane - if you know anyone from Ireland then let them know we're coming (& lock the doors!). We're gonna keep you up to date with our tour shenanigans with lots of blog-type entries and hopefully some live tour footage so keep your eyes peeled!

As you can see on the right there, we have some brand new merchandise (including a cool new tshirt and some uber-PC, limited-edition badges) check out the merch page and if you like it come down to one of our gigs and give us your money, we're gonna be very poor on tour. We need some more ideas of how we can eat/drink really cheaply aswell so leave us a message if you have any thoughts.

Well check out our tour-dates, come see us, tell your friends to come see us, listen to our tunes, leave us a message, send us a cheque etc etc.

Comin to a town near you,

Love

The Upstarts x

A random fact brought to you by THE UPSTARTS:
